The king of hype – Balenciaga – new rules in fashion

Until recently, few people knew about the BALENCIAGA brand. And even then, those were mostly representatives of the fashion industry, not more. How did it happen that the French brand, which has existed since the beginning of the 20th century, remained in the shadows for so long, and over the past 2-3 years, made a breakthrough that it has become one of the most popular and best-selling brands in the world along with Gucci and Louis Vuitton?

Development of Balenciaga as a trend-setting brand

The Cristobal Balenciaga Fashion House was founded in 1914. One of the first regular clients of the fashion designer was Carmel Snow, the manager of Harper’s Bazaar. And soon the Spanish royal family itself began to order suits from him.

Balenciaga was not only an innovative designer who challenged the established fashion canons, but also a talented mentor. Among his protégés are Oscar de la Renta and Hubert de Givenchy, each of whom became the founder of his own fashion house.

The Parisian Haute Couture Syndicate wanted to create uniform haute couture rules for all designers to follow. Balenciaga strongly opposed the rules of the Syndicate and as a result, his clothes were never considered “haute couture”.

In 1972, Cristobal Balenciaga passed away and his fashion house plunged into a long stagnation. Since that time, the brand has been headed by various world-renowned designers, such as Alexander Wong. But none of them managed to revive the former glory of the fashion house. And only with the arrival of Demna Gvasalia as creative director for the BALENCIAGA fashion house a new era began. What do we know about him?

  • Demna Gvasalia is a native of the Georgian Black Sea resort town of Sukhumi.
  • The designer studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp, from which, among others, Dirk Bikkembergs graduated.
  • From 2009 to 2012, Gvasalia worked as a womenswear designer at Maison Martin Margiela.
  • From 2012 to 2014 at Louis Vuitton under the patronage of Nicolas Ghesquière and Marc Jacobs.
  • Demna Gvasalia began his solo career in 2014, when, together with his brother, he founded his own brand – Vetements. The popularity was not long in coming – dresses in the corporate flower and reconstructed items became must-haves in the wardrobe of world stars.
  • In 2015, Demna Gvasalia became the head of BALENCIAGA.

Demna Gvasalia is the real king of hype. And while his competitors are looking for inspiration in Italian streets or in French cafes, the designer is breaking all stereotypes about high fashion. His collections include bags of kittens and puppies, leather bags, ugly sneakers and accessories that resemble things from a cheap travel market.

Balenciaga for kids – what can be better?

Balenciaga launched the first collection for children in 2017. It includes mini-copies of items from the brand’s adult collections. Sweaters with pins and bright raincoats, as well as “Think Big”, “The Power of Dreams” sweatshirts, monochrome sweatshirts, hoodies, “Dream’18” T-shirts, Speed Trainer sock sneakers and even “shoe covers”.
